Willy Appelhans

2698 Heath Ave. - The Bronx, New York City

Born in Osterode, Germany in 1889, Appelhans was a successful pro racer from 1911 until 1923. He immigrated to the USA, opened a bike shop and made a name as a top bike frame maker.

An employee under Appelhans, Lance Claudel , also became a well-known frame builder.

Willy had a sad ending; his son was convicted of a serious crime and executed. Subsequently, in the 1930s Willy himself committed suicide.
