J. ENGELS, WHO HELD THE YELLOW JERSEY, 1948 TOUR DE FRANCE

“Although he did not win a stage, Jan Engels (Belgium), riding for Cycles Dardenne, took the yellow jersey away from the Gino Bartali (Italy) in the second stage of the 1948 Tour de France. Louison Bobet (France) then took the yellow in the third stage. Bartali reclaimed it in the 14th and kept it for the final 7 stages to win the Tour. Is Engels’ Dardenne effort the only constructeur-sponsored rider to ever wear the fabled Maillot Jaune?”
